The Collaboration
As two artists, from unique yet similar backgrounds, we have been working together since 2004 exploring shared ideas around the human connection with water. Through this evolvement and our individual approaches to both content and medium we have formed a complementary and dynamic working partnership together.
As our first large scale production, The Fear of Falling has presented us with a chance to develop our individual roles as director and photographer as well as a wonderful opportunity to project manage our ‘baby’ in all aspects, from conception to actualisation. Perfectionists at heart, gently pushing each other, we have strove to make our vision possible. Through the sharing and learning on our journey, we have discovered new understandings and strengths, both collaboratively and independently, as well as flexed synapses we never knew we had!
In the almost filmic sequence, not only have we intended to push the boundaries of underwater photography and hopefully open a poignant discourse about submergence, we have stood to challenge traditional notions of the photographer as sole creator of the photographic image. Through the marriage of our skills and expertise, we bring the viewer instead two visionaries behind the creation of these portraits; in art direction, in photography and, most significantly, in the depths of our awareness and understanding of our relationship with water.
Fundamentally, within The Fear of Falling, we wish to present new ways to consider and appreciate the magical and powerful experience of submergence. To pose a few questions, captivate a few souls and evoke a sense of wonder. We hope you enjoy the work.
